In a statement from the Istanbul Governorship, it was noted that "the term of office for teachers and administrators in project schools is a minimum of 4 years and a maximum of 8 years. All teachers and administrators whose terms have expired have been granted the right to choose 10 schools by our Ministry. The results were announced on April 8, 2025. A total of 8,380 teachers have been appointed. There are 1,471 teachers who could not be placed."
Recently, students gathered to protest the claims that teachers in many project schools were dismissed for political reasons, and the actions quickly spread to numerous schools.
In a statement from the Istanbul Governorship, it was said, "Recently, false publications and shares have been made on social media platforms and various media outlets regarding the changes made to the positions of teachers in some schools in Istanbul, with expressions such as 'teachers were suspended, permanent teachers were expelled from their schools, they were victimized, other teachers were appointed in their places for political reasons,' etc."
"THEIR TERMS HAVE BEEN EXTENDED FOR 1 MORE YEAR"
The statement included the following expressions: "It has become necessary to make a statement to prevent the confusion that these unfounded claims may create in our society. In this context, not a single teacher has been suspended in Istanbul. The ongoing process is the reassignment and appointment process for some of our teachers whose terms have expired in Private Program and Project Implementing Schools under the Ministry of National Education. The 'Regulation on Teacher Appointment and Administrator Assignment' for Private Program and Project Implementing Educational Institutions came into effect in 2020. Since then, the terms of teachers working in the relevant schools have been reset and restarted. The terms of teachers assigned for 4 years starting from 2020 have been extended by 1 more year in 2024 by our Ministry.
PLACEMENT RESULTS WERE ANNOUNCED ON APRIL 8
According to the provision in the 'Regulation on Private Program and Project Implementing Educational Institutions' published by our Ministry of National Education, it is stated that the terms of teachers and administrators working in project schools are at least 4 years and at most 8 years. In this context, the teachers whose terms have expired have been determined and announced by our Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education on February 6-10, 2025. From February 12 to 19, 2025, all teachers and administrators whose terms have expired were given the right to choose 10 schools by our Ministry. On April 8, 2025, the placement results were announced.
"1471 OF OUR TEACHERS COULD NOT BE PLACED IN ANY PREFERENCE"
According to these placement results; 8380 teachers have been appointed to Private Program and Project Implementing Educational Institutions. There are 1471 teachers who could not be placed in any of their preferences. These teachers have been granted the right to change their positions, taking into account their preferences, according to the April 2025 norm surplus relocation schedule. The reasons for the non-assignment of the 1471 teachers who were not assigned for the second 4 years in our province are based on the narrowing of teacher norms in some educational institutions and the failure to realize their assignments based on the teachers' preferences. The relevant teachers will be placed in their new schools according to their preferences in the fields where there is a need in educational institutions within the province and district, based on their service points. Due to this administrative decision, there is no issue of any grievances regarding the personal rights and career steps of the teachers. For the above reasons, the number of teachers subject to relocation constitutes approximately 1% of the total teacher staff in Istanbul, while it constitutes 10% of the teacher staff in our Private Program and Project Implementing Schools. The mentioned teachers will have the right to apply again during the preference period next year. While the terms of the mentioned teachers in these schools average over 15 years, they have been limited to a total of 8 years, with 4+4 as per the current regulation that came into effect in 2020.
Teachers working in Private Program and Project Implementing Educational Institutions also serve as advisory teachers for national and international project implementations, preparing students for scientific, cultural, and technological projects, events, and competitions, conducting support and training courses for students, serving as dormitory teachers for boarding schools, etc. The above-mentioned matters are among the founding purposes of these schools. The selection of teachers according to their preferences has been made in accordance with the purpose of the relevant regulation.
