It is stated that due to the Super El Niño expected to take effect in 2026, extreme temperatures, floods, and overflow risks may increase in Turkey. Weather events expected to start with July are predicted to intensify especially in late summer and autumn. Experts indicate that heatwaves could exceed 40 degrees Celsius, and the risk of heavy rainfall and flash floods may also rise.
Experts have warned that the risk of extreme temperatures, floods, and heavy rainfall in Turkey will increase due to the "Super El Nino" expected to take effect in 2026.
Meteorology Expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen, speaking to CNN Türk, said the strongest Super El Nino wave since 1997 is approaching. Şen stated that El Nino will begin in July and will increase its impact during autumn and winter.
TEMPERATURE AND FLOOD RISK IN TURKEY WILL INCREASE
Prof. Dr. Şen noted that heatwaves will occur consecutively, especially in July, August, and September, and said extreme temperatures could exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
Şen added that floods, heavy rainfall, and inundations may become more frequent during the autumn months.
“COULD BE STRONGER THAN 1997”
Şen, stating that El Nino is a global meteorological phenomenon occurring with the rise in sea surface temperatures in the Eastern Pacific, said this system increases the risk of natural disasters in many parts of the world.
Experts highlight that El Nino can lead to drought, excessive rainfall, and irregularities in weather events.
