It has been claimed that Russia has shared advanced drone warfare tactics developed during the Ukraine war with Iran, thereby attempting to strengthen Tehran's potential attack capacity against the U.S. and Gulf countries. According to the allegations, the experiences conveyed by Moscow include tactics specifically aimed at overcoming air defense systems, swarm drone attacks, and combined missile-drone operations.
According to reports in the US press, it is claimed that Russia has shared the advanced drone tactics it developed in the Ukraine war with Iran. According to CNN, this military experience provided by Moscow is believed to potentially enhance Iran's attack capacity against US and Gulf targets.
CLAIM OF TRAINING FOR MILITARY OFFICIALS
The report suggests that Russia has provided training and consultancy to Iranian military officials regarding the drone warfare techniques it has heavily utilized in Ukraine. It is noted that these tactics particularly include "swarm attacks," where numerous drones are used simultaneously, complex drone-missile strikes aimed at overcoming air defense systems, and electronic warfare methods.
COOPERATION DEEPENED DURING THE WAR
US officials express that the military cooperation between Russia and Iran has deepened recently. Previous intelligence assessments have also suggested that Moscow may have shared information with Iran regarding the locations of US military assets.
Analysts state that the Ukraine war has served as a significant laboratory for drone usage, and the tactics developed by Russia here could be adopted by Iran, potentially affecting the security balances in the Middle East.
Experts believe that the large-scale use of low-cost and hard-to-detect kamikaze drones can exert serious pressure on air defense systems and is seen as an effective method for targeting critical infrastructure.
DID RUSSIA ENTER THE WAR?
There is no definitive confirmation that Russia has directly entered the war; however, claims of sharing military information or tactics with Iran arise for several strategic reasons. The main reasons are as follows:
1. Establishing a strategic balance against the US
Russia aims to limit the US's military influence in the Middle East. The strengthening of Iran could lead Washington to allocate more resources in the region, which could strengthen Russia's position in global competition.
2. Alliance formed due to the Ukraine war
Russia and Iran have particularly grown closer in recent years, especially after the Ukraine war. In response to Western sanctions, the two countries have increased military and economic cooperation. It is known that Iran has provided drones to Russia; in return, it is discussed that Russia could share technology and tactics.
3. Increasing influence in the Middle East
Russia wants to enhance its influence in the region after Syria. Establishing a close military relationship with Iran could expand Moscow's geopolitical influence in the Gulf and Levant region.
4. Joint front against the West
Russia, Iran, China, and some other countries occasionally act with the goal of creating an alternative power balance against the US-led Western bloc. Therefore, security and military cooperation can increase.
5. Sharing military technology and combat experience
The Ukraine war has particularly introduced new tactics in the fields of drones and electronic warfare. Russia sharing this experience could enhance Iran's military capacity.
US-ISRAEL ATTACKS ON IRAN
While negotiations continue between the Tehran and Washington administrations, Israel and the US launched a military attack on Iran on February 28. Iran responded with attacks on targets it identified in several regional countries, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, where US bases are located, in addition to Israel.
In the US-Israel attacks, many high-ranking officials, including Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, were killed. According to Iranian officials, the death toll from the US-Israel attacks has exceeded 1,348, and the number of injured has surpassed 17,000.
