Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Ebu Kasra stated that Russian bases in Syria could remain open if it benefits the country.

"RUSSIAN BASES CAN STAY IF SYRIA BENEFITS"

In an interview with the American Washington Post newspaper, Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Ebu Kasra addressed relations with Russia. Minister Kasra expressed that Russia's attitude towards the new Syrian government has "significantly improved" since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December, and that Damascus is evaluating Moscow's demands. Regarding the Moscow administration, which is an ally of Assad, Kasra said, "There are no permanent enemies in politics." In response to the question of whether Russia would be allowed to maintain its naval base in Tartus and the Hmeymim airbase in Latakia, Kasra answered, "Yes, if it benefits Syria."

"TIME IS NEEDED WITH THE NEW US ADMINISTRATION"

Kasra also noted that Syria is considering defense agreements with many countries and that sensitive negotiations are being conducted regarding the status of military bases in the country with both the US and Turkey. He emphasized that the issue of whether the US will maintain its military presence in northeastern Syria is also "in the negotiation phase." Kasra stated, "Everyone was waiting for Trump to come to power. The matter needs some time between the US administration and the new Syrian government."

Addressing the occupation of northern and northeastern Syria by the terrorist organization YPG, Kasra noted that the goal of Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara is to bring the region under the control of Damascus and to ensure that the government controls the prisons in the area. Stating that "a military solution will lead to bloodshed on both sides," Kasra said, "According to our assessment, the solution will be peaceful. We are not inclined towards a military solution."
