In the tragic event that occurred on November 7 in Independence, Missouri, 34-year-old Maria Pike and her 2-month-old daughter Destinii Hope lost their lives. The incident was captured on police camera. The incident began with a fight between grandmother Talisa Coombs, who was concerned about the baby's health, and Pike. Coombs claimed that Pike attacked her and tried to push her down the stairs. Following this, Social Services and the police were called. In the police camera footage, officers are seen entering the apartment and finding Pike with her baby inside a closet. The officers tried to talk to Pike for 11 minutes, but she only responded by shaking her head. The police attempted to persuade Pike to let go of the baby. However, Pike sat on the edge of the bed where a large knife was located. The footage shows her raising the knife above her head while holding the baby and lunging towards the police. Pike's twin sister, Nina Book, stated, "The police should be held accountable," and noted that her sister was a mother of three, a talented and intelligent person. The family said that Pike suffered from severe postpartum depression. Concerns about Pike's mental health had been raised before the incident. In August, she had told hospital staff after giving birth that she was homeless and had thoughts of self-harm. Social Services attempted to intervene, but the couple had refused help. As the investigation into the incident continues, three police officers have been placed on administrative leave. Family members criticize Social Services for not intervening earlier and more effectively in the situation.
