01.11.2024 20:00

In Çanakkale, a young woman named Tuğba Yavaş fell from the balcony of their apartment on the 5th floor and lost her life. Yavaş's husband, Prof. Dr. Alptekin Yavaş, a faculty member at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, was taken into custody and has been arrested. In the professor's statement, he said, "Her hands started to slip away from mine. I held on for a few seconds, but I couldn't pull her back. After that, I ran out of strength as well, and she slipped from my hands and fell onto the motorcycle below."

On October 30 in Çanakkale, after Restorer Tuğba Yavaş fell from the balcony of their apartment on the 5th floor and lost her life, her husband, Prof. Dr. Alptekin Yavaş, who is a faculty member at ÇOMÜ Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, was arrested. Yavaş's statement at the police station has emerged.

DESPITE ALL INTERVENTIONS, TUĞBA COULD NOT BE SAVED

The incident occurred on October 30 around 02:30 in the apartment on Aziz Nesin Street in Hamidiye Neighborhood. Restorer Tuğba Yavaş fell from the balcony of the apartment on the 5th floor onto a parked motorcycle for an unknown reason. Upon noticing the situation, neighbors alerted the police and health teams to the scene. Tuğba Yavaş was taken to Mehmet Akif Ersoy State Hospital by ambulance, but despite interventions, she could not be saved.

The police, who launched an investigation into the incident, consulted the statement of Tuğba Yavaş's husband, Prof. Dr. Alptekin Yavaş, a faculty member at ÇOMÜ Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Yavaş was detained on suspicion of murder. After his procedures at the police station, Alptekin Yavaş was referred to the courthouse and was arrested by the court he was brought before yesterday.

"I OFFERED DIVORCE BUT SHE NEVER APPROACHED IT"

After the incident, Alptekin Yavaş's statement at the police station was revealed. In his statement, Yavaş said, "I am an archaeologist, and my wife is a restorer. We got married in 2008. My wife had epilepsy and would have seizures from time to time. Until August 2023, we had a problem-free marriage, but after that, Tuğba changed a lot. She would sometimes have jealousy crises. She thought I was cheating on her with my students or sometimes with other faculty members.

In October 2023, we consulted a doctor and a family therapist regarding this issue. We both started taking medication on the advice of the doctors. When Tuğba took her medication, she began to calm down. In December 2023, while we were driving on the İzmir Highway, we started to argue. She had entered another jealousy crisis regarding my students. She opened the car door and jumped out onto the road. Her knees were injured. She got back in the car, and we continued on our way. Since our fights turned violent, I offered divorce, but she never approached it," he said.

"I SPLASHED WATER ON HER FACE TO JOKE"

Alptekin Yavaş stated that on the day of the incident, after Tuğba Yavaş went out to prepare a memorial service for a neighbor, she returned home. "She was boiling syrup in the kitchen. We went to the bedroom. She got angry because I was on my phone before going to bed. The argument escalated. Tuğba was a heavy woman. Sometimes I couldn't overpower her. She grabbed my arms and started to hit me, then she came at me with my son's pull-up bar. I slapped her to get her to calm down. I went to the bathroom to calm down. I knew she would come after me. When I splashed water on her face to joke, she got even angrier. I took a shower and came out of the bathroom," he expressed.

Yavaş continued his statement as follows:

"When she wasn't in the bedroom or the hallway, I went out to the balcony. She climbed over the railings, saying she would jump. I immediately went to her side. When I got closer, I noticed her feet dangling below the balcony. When I saw her holding onto the railings and waiting for me, I thought her foot had slipped. I asked her to lift her foot up, but she couldn't because she was heavy. She said, 'Pull me up.' I tried to pull her by her t-shirt, but it slipped. She said, 'Pull with your teeth.' I tried, but I couldn't do it. I told her it was a silly idea. She asked me to bring a cloth because her hands were slipping. I couldn't go inside because I was holding her. Her hands started to slip from mine. I held on for a few seconds, but I couldn't pull her up. After that, I ran out of strength too, and she slipped from my hands and fell onto the motorcycle below. I definitely didn't think she would commit suicide. The blood stains on my wife probably belong to me. The bloody tissues in the room are also due to the scratches on my arm."
