12-year-old Zemfira Mukhtarov and 13-year-old Ebba Morina were found dead on top of a train at the Marcy Avenue–Broadway station in Williamsburg.
In this madness called "subway surfing," young people film dangerous videos by climbing on top of the train instead of boarding it normally.
Weeks before her death, Zemfira had shared moments of surfing on a train and walking on the train tracks on her TikTok account.
In the videos, the little girl tries to maintain her balance while holding onto a bridge beam as a train passes underneath her.
Her mother, Nataliya Rudenko, said she tried to dissuade her daughter from this behavior but was unsuccessful:
"She was a child who chased adventure. Instead of sitting in her room, she would constantly try new things."
Zemfira lost her life just a few weeks before her 13th birthday.
Her mother recounted that she learned of her daughter's death while watching the news on television:
"I thought she was sleeping in her room. Now we are planning her funeral."
The little girl's 11-year-old sister, Maryam, said she recognized Zemfira's skateboard and bag in the footage she saw on the news:
"As soon as I saw the skateboard, I knew it was hers."
Father Ruslan Mukhtarov shared his pain through GoFundMe with the following words:
"No parent should lose their child in such a tragic way. We still cannot accept this pain."
Transportation officials described the incident as "a very sad tragedy," while police announced that five people have died while subway surfing in New York this year.
