A mosque imam in Adana was stabbed to death by a 16-year-old boy, who claimed in his statement that the imam had harassed his 14-year-old sister. The girl, who is alleged to have been harassed by the deceased imam, shared her experiences. HE KILLED THE IMAM AND SURRENDERED TO THE POLICEThe incident occurred on November 24 at the Fet Ahmet Mosque in the Sinanpaşa neighborhood of Yüreğir district. According to allegations, the mosque imam Tarık Karadağ was stabbed by a young man named M.A. and died in the hospital where he was taken. The young man later surrendered to the police, and the imam's body was taken to the forensic medicine institute's morgue for an autopsy. The imam's body was buried the next day after the autopsy was completed, taken by his relatives to Buruk Cemetery. The young man, who was referred to the courthouse after his procedures at the police station, was arrested by the court he was brought before. "I NEVER EXPECTED IT FROM AN IMAM, WHO IS OLDER THAN MY FATHER"F.A. (14), who claimed to have been harassed by the imam, shared her experiences. F.A. said, "I was studying to memorize the Quran, and I knew his son while I was at school. He used to come and go to the Quran memorization course despite it being forbidden for him to enter the girls' dormitory. He would see me during ceremonies and gradually started showing me special interest. I felt this interest, but I kept telling myself it was just a father's love. I never expected it from an imam who is older than my father. I didn't think about it; most people said he was good, and I thought he was good too." HE SAID, "SHALL WE GO FROM HERE AFTER KISSING MY HAND?"F.A. explained that he took her outside under the pretext of buying clothes before the Eid al-Adha. "While he was in his car, he held my hand and kissed it. He insisted on taking me outside, saying he wanted to buy clothes. I thought there would be others from my family with him, so they allowed me to go. When I went to him, I wanted to sit in the back when I saw he was alone in the car. He insisted that I sit in the front. I moved to the front, and while we were traveling, he held my hand and continued despite me pulling away. Even though I showed that I was uncomfortable, he continued and kissed my hand. He said he wanted to hug me and said things he shouldn't have said, like 'Let's go from here, do you have your ID with you?' He said things that should not be said to a girl who is not of legal age," she stated. THEY SAID, "LET'S COVER UP THE INCIDENT"F.A. emphasized that Tarık Karadağ constantly sent her messages, saying, "He was sending messages, and I wasn't responding, but he kept sending and calling. I explained the situation to my teacher at the Quran memorization course. My teacher spoke with the wife of the district mufti. The mufti and his wife told me to be quiet, saying absolutely do not tell anyone and let’s cover up the incident. They said I must have misunderstood, that he would never do such a thing. There was nothing to misunderstand; everything was clear. We submitted petitions to both the Directorate of Religious Affairs and the prosecutor's office. Our petition was rejected, and a decision of non-prosecution was made. I couldn't take out my camera while the incident was happening. Just because I wasn't raped that day, this incident was closed," she said. "MY BROTHER DIDN'T EVEN USE CIGARETTES"With tears in her eyes, F.A. continued, "We tried very hard; we also gave statements to the prosecutor's office. We applied everywhere, but we were always rejected. You say my brother is a drug addict, but he didn't even smoke cigarettes. We are all people who pray. We tried very hard; we went to the Directorate of Religious Affairs, the prosecutor's office, everywhere. But we never received any response. My brother wanted to talk, saying, 'I experienced this today; tomorrow, other girls shouldn't have to.' I know it wasn't just done to me. Please, if it has happened to another girl, let her not stay silent. We need the support of others. My brother would never want to kill anyone; he had to do it to protect himself when he was attacked," she said. "THEY DID NOT TAKE ME SERIOUSLY"Father Fatih A. said, "The class teacher at the Quran course explained the situation to me. I filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office. I met face to face with the district and provincial muftis about this issue. I requested the imam's removal, but they did not take me seriously. The petition I submitted to the prosecutor's office came back to me as a decision of non-prosecution. I submitted another petition, and a decision of non-prosecution was also made on that. While I was discussing this issue with my wife, my son overheard our conversation. Then what happened happened. My son was someone who wouldn't hurt a fly. He was a child who was innocent. They write on social media that he was a drug addict or a heroin user. He was a child who didn't even smoke; what are you basing this on? As a father, I feel devastated," he said.
