The ancient sword known as "Excalibur" in France, which has been stuck in a rock for 1,300 years according to local legend, mysteriously disappeared from the town.

The sword was stolen by a thief from the stone in the small medieval town of Rocamadour. This sword was one of the town's most important attractions.

For centuries, this sword was believed to belong to Roland, a semi-legendary knight who bravely fought for Charlemagne in the 8th century. Rocamadour officials have launched an investigation into the removal of the sword from a rock wall about 30 meters high.

According to legend, Durandal was unbreakable and the sharpest sword in the world, capable of cutting even stone with a single blow. The magical properties of the sword are described in the epic poem "The Song of Roland," written in the 11th century. This poem is the oldest surviving major work of French literature, and the only surviving copy is kept in the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

According to the legend, Charlemagne obtained this sword from an angel and gave it to his best soldier. Roland tried to break the sword by hitting it against rocks to prevent it from falling into the hands of his enemies before dying heroically in the Battle of Roncevaux Pass, but even he couldn't destroy the sword. The knight threw the sword into the air, and after traveling hundreds of miles, it got stuck in the rock in Rocamadour.

The disappearance of the sword deeply shook the local people. Dominique Lenfant, the Mayor of Rocamadour, said in an interview with the French newspaper La Dépêche, "We will miss the sword. It has been a part of Rocamadour for centuries, and there is no tourist guide that doesn't show the sword during visits." He added, "Rocamadour feels like a part of itself has been stolen. Even if it's a legend, the destinies of our village and this sword are intertwined."

The police are trying to determine how someone climbed the 30-meter-high steep rock surface to steal the sword.
