The British government has asked British citizens living in Lebanon to leave the country.

20.09.2024 15:12

The UK Foreign Secretary has urged British citizens living in Lebanon to leave the country due to the potential outbreak of hot conflict between Israel and Lebanon.

The cyber attack by Israel on Lebanon and the new military deployment to the Lebanese border have increased tensions between the two countries. For months, the UK has been preparing to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon, and this time it issued an urgent coded warning.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy chaired an urgent coded meeting to discuss the situation in Lebanon. The meeting detailed the necessary actions for the evacuation of British citizens living in Lebanon in case of an emergency. British media reports that the government is preparing for the worst-case scenario in Lebanon.

Immediately after the urgent coded meeting, the British Foreign Secretary stated on social media that the situation could rapidly deteriorate following attacks carried out with explosives belonging to Hezbollah members, which resulted in the deaths of 37 people and injuries to approximately 3,000. He urged British citizens to leave Lebanon.

In his post on the X social media platform, he stated, "My message to British citizens in Lebanon is to leave the country while commercial options are still available."

The British government has been warning its citizens to leave the country for more than a month.

"FULL-SCALE WAR" ABOUT TO BEGIN

Israel has been frequently attacking Lebanon over the past year, paralleling its massacres in Gaza. Israel and Hezbollah are exchanging fire across the border, and Israeli warplanes are flying over Beirut almost daily, breaking the sound barrier to instill fear in the people.

The population living near the Israeli border in the south of the country has been forced to leave their homes. Some have sought refuge in central Beirut, while it is speculated that in the event of larger conflicts, the Lebanese people may prefer Turkey due to the instability in Syria.

The people in the region are worried about experiencing a repeat of the war that occurred in 2006. During the armed conflicts that lasted from July 12 to August 14, 2006, 1,109 Lebanese lost their lives, and more than 3,500 were injured. The conflicts forced more than a million Lebanese to leave their homes.

TURKEY PLAYS A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN EVACUATIONS

Among those killed in the attacks were foreigners in Lebanon. However, many countries quickly took action to evacuate their citizens by sea. Turkey played significant roles in most of these evacuations, providing transportation and hosting. In contrast, Israel conducted harassment fire against the ship carrying Australians.

TURKEY IN THE PEACEKEEPING FORCE

With Resolution 1701, it was decided to increase the presence of the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in Lebanon to 15,000 personnel and to expand its mission. Therefore, many countries, including France, Italy, Turkey, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Spain, were asked to send troops. Turkey, which responded positively to this request, had a Turkish military unit sent to Lebanon to join the United Nations peacekeeping force, with the Prime Ministry's motion being accepted in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey with 344 votes in favor against 200 votes against on September 5, 2006.
