A 43-year-old car mechanic, Fatih Taştan, lost his life after a 2.5-ton car he was repairing fell on him in Beykoz. Taştan's brother claimed that the incident occurred due to negligence, stating, "The apprentice noticed that the lift had lowered by itself and reported it to the business owner. The business owner said, 'We know, it’s fine. You can continue working like this.'"
An occupational homicide occurred at a car repair shop in Kavacık, Beykoz, Istanbul, on April 10 in the afternoon. According to the information obtained, the car mechanic Fatih Taştan (43), a father of two, was seriously injured when the car he was repairing fell after being lifted by a car lift. Health teams were dispatched to the repair shop upon notification. Taştan was taken to the hospital by ambulance. After 22 days of treatment in intensive care, Taştan passed away on May 2.
"THE 2.5-TON VEHICLE FELL ON MY BROTHER" Fatih Taştan's brother, Çağatay Mehmet Taştan, said, "My brother passed away as a result of a work accident. He was working there. He was the service manager and was doing repairs. He had no partnership. On April 10, around 2:30 PM, he was going under a vehicle to repair it. The interns and apprentices were lifting the vehicle. There are lifts in the service area, the lifts that lift the vehicles. When the interns lifted the car, they stepped on the left rear leg, causing the lift to slip. Besides that, they pressed the gas while lifting the vehicle. When the car was halfway up, the right rear leg of the lift also moved out of place, and after the lift had completely raised the vehicle, my brother came under the car while trying to check it, and suddenly the lift's legs dropped, and the 2.5-ton vehicle fell on my brother. After being trapped under the vehicle, they tried to get my brother out for 10-15 minutes. Everyone was already in a panic for a few minutes. After that, they got my brother out from under the car and called for an ambulance. He was taken to the hospital. After being taken to the hospital, he underwent brain surgery for 6.5 hours. After that surgery, he was taken for another 3-hour surgery, a brain surgery. After that, he stayed in intensive care for 22 days. He was intubated and had no consciousness. He was not himself at all. He passed away after 22 days," he said.
"THEY WERE NOT WITH US MATERIALLY OR SPIRITUALLY" Taştan said, "During this process, the employers, the owners of the workplace came to the hospital only for one or two days. After that, they neither called us nor provided any spiritual support in any way. My mother, I, and our relatives were at the hospital every day. After losing my brother, they still were not with us in any way. My brother has three salaries inside, and they did not support us in any way until then. We did not even have a request for material support during this process. We have lost our loved one; we are not thinking about anything material, but they were not with us materially or spiritually in any way," he said.
"THEY WERE GOING TO TRANSFER THE SHOP" Taştan stated that they want the responsible parties to be punished as severely as possible, saying, "According to the news we received, their shop has been closed for 4-5 days; they are transferring the shop, they are selling it. We received news about this. But of course, even if they sell their shop, they cannot escape anywhere. We hope that justice will pursue them in every way. We have initiated our legal proceedings. We want them to receive the heaviest punishment. We trust our justice," he expressed.
"THEY SAID, 'WORK LIKE THIS, NOTHING WILL HAPPEN'" Çağatay Mehmet Taştan said, "A month before the car fell on my brother, an apprentice working with my brother was lifting his own car for a repair. After lifting the car, he went to the changing room, and when he came back, he saw that his car was going down by itself because the lift was empty. He reported this to the owners of the workplace. He said, 'This lift did this, it is faulty, it cannot be worked with.' They said, 'Nothing will happen, continue. We know that the lift is like that, nothing will happen. You continue to work like this,' and we learned about this incident after losing my brother," he said.
"IT WAS AN 18-YEAR-OLD LIFT" Emphasizing that there was great negligence in the incident, Taştan said, "Of course, fate comes first, but there is a lot of negligence in this. Even our prosecutors who see this said so. This is an attempted murder, as you know. That lift was faulty beforehand, and there are 7-8 lifts there. The lift that fell on my brother was very old. It was a 15 to 18-year-old lift. There were no maintenance or inspections at all. We learned these later. Of course, my brother will not come back. Our only wish is that whoever caused this to happen to my brother, the owners of the workplace, or whoever is involved, we want them to receive the heaviest punishment for this. Our only concern is this," he said.
"HOW WILL WE TELL HIS CHILDREN?" Taştan concluded his remarks with the following statements: "My mother is not at peace, I am not at peace. My brother has a 2.5-year-old daughter and a 1.5-year-old son. They do not even know their father. They know that their father is in the hospital and that he is sleeping. They do not even know that he has died. How will we tell them these things? More than anything, how will I keep my mother standing? We want them to receive such a heavy punishment that our hearts will only be at peace that way. I do not want anything else."
