Climate activist and journalist Yücel Sönmez passed away at the age of 59. The autopsy revealed that the cause of Sönmez's death was high blood pressure and a heart attack. Family members who received the body struggled to stand, while Sönmez's sister said, "My brother was very good, he left us too early. He had so much more to do, he had many plans. There were still things he wanted to write."
The climate activist journalist Yücel Sönmez (49), who worked for various newspapers and radio channels, including Hürriyet, passed away yesterday due to an illness at his home in Burgazada.
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND HEART ATTACK TOOK HIS LIFE
The journalist's body was brought to the Forensic Medicine Institution. It was learned that the cause of death was high blood pressure and a heart attack following the autopsy. Sönmez's funeral will be held today at the family cemetery in Kilyos. Meanwhile, it was observed that family members who came to receive the body had difficulty standing.
"HE LEFT TOO EARLY"
Zeynep Uçar, who said that her brother's death was too early, stated, "They brought him in saying it was a heart attack; that’s how we were informed. Now we are waiting at the Forensic Medicine. My brother was amazing, a true environmentalist. He was a friend to both humans and animals; all his friends, especially those on the island, know him. My brother was very good; he left too early. He had so much more to do, so many plans. There were still things he wanted to write. He had many things he wanted to do for nature. He always talked about these, but he couldn't realize any of them. It happened too early. He had no known health issues; it was a sudden heart attack that caught him in his sleep. He lay down and never woke up again," she said.
