An incident occurred in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Nurhawati Zihura (46), a mother of four, was attacked by a 4-meter-long crocodile while washing her feet by the sea in a coastal village. The villagers heard the woman's screams but could not intervene. The crocodile spun its victim around with movements known as the "death roll" to stun her and dragged her underwater. About an hour later, the crocodile resurfaced with Nurhawati's lifeless body in its jaws. Eyewitness Agustinus (40) said, "It was a horrifying sight. We screamed, but the crocodile did not let her go. Later, we went out in boats and threw a chicken to the crocodile to make it release the body." Nurhawati's relative Fendi stated that the woman wanted to wash her feet in the seawater because she was not feeling well. Eventually, the villagers were able to recover the body, and a funeral ceremony was held in the evening. Police and soldiers found and killed the crocodile. Authorities are calling for measures to be taken against the increasing crocodile attacks in the region. More than 450 people have lost their lives to crocodile attacks in Indonesia over the past decade. Experts indicate that crocodiles are approaching human settlements more due to overhunting and habitat loss. Local people, especially those who use rivers for washing and fishing, are at great risk.
