In the severe flood disaster that occurred in New South Wales, the death toll has reached 4, while approximately 50,000 people are stranded.
The toll from the floods caused by heavy rains that have been affecting the rural areas and Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, for the past three days is worsening. In a statement from the New South Wales Emergency Service, it was reported that two people trapped in their vehicles by floodwaters have died, raising the total death toll to four, with one person still missing. Approximately 50,000 people are reported to be stranded due to the floods, and 177 rescue operations have been carried out in the last 24 hours. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology stated that the amount of rainfall seen in about four months occurred in just three days. It was noted that the intensity of the rain is expected to decrease from the evening hours.
SOME SUBURBAN TRAIN LINES AND FLIGHTS IN SYDNEY HAVE BEEN CANCELLED
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese canceled his planned visit to Taree, one of the towns most affected by the floods. In a statement to reporters in the town of Maitland in the Hunter region, Prime Minister Albanese said, "We tried to go. However, it was not possible due to the conditions. I am sure people will understand this. But our thoughts are currently with those who are stranded. We are here to clearly and openly say that you are not alone." Life has been paralyzed. The heavy rains have also adversely affected air and rail transport. Some suburban train lines and flights in Sydney have been canceled. It has been learned that the Warragamba Dam, which supplies 80% of Sydney's water needs and is currently 96% full, is at risk of overflowing.
