In Indonesia, Rudie Heru Komandono and his passenger, who fell from an unfinished bridge while following directions on Google Maps, escaped the accident with minor injuries. Rudie, who was traveling on a new and incomplete road indicated by the navigation app, entered a gap in the concrete barriers and fell 12 meters down. After the accident, authorities stated that they had closed the gap and placed warning signs.
In Indonesia, 61-year-old Rudie Heru Komandono experienced a horrific accident while following Google Maps. Security camera footage captured the moment the driver fell 12 meters down from an unfinished bridge.
The incident occurred on April 9. Rudie was using the navigation app on his smartphone while driving to a friend's address in his BMW 3 Series. Google Maps directed the driver through a new and unfinished road. Confused by the mixed directions on the vehicle's screen, Rudie entered a restricted area by passing through a gap in the concrete barriers.
The footage shows the luxury vehicle falling from the unfinished bridge, hitting the ground with its bumper and nearly flipping over towards oncoming traffic. In the accident, Rudie and his 47-year-old passenger Endang Sri Wahyuni miraculously escaped without serious injuries.
After the accident, Rudie stated, "The road suddenly went dark and there were no other vehicles. Then I realized there was a problem when the car started to fall. It wasn't my fault; I was trying to follow the GPS on my phone, but it was confusing."
Inspector Aswoko from the Gresik Police Traffic Unit noted that the driver was too focused on the navigation app and did not notice the barrier that prevented access to the unfinished bridge on the JI Tol Manyar - Mojokerto road.
Authorities announced that they had closed the gap through which the car passed after the accident and placed warning signs. They also stated that they would consult with the construction company to find out why the bridge was not completely closed.
Similar accidents have occurred recently in different parts of the world. In Seoul, a motorcyclist fell into a suddenly opened pit and lost his life, while in Brazil, a toppled tanker caused numerous vehicles to catch fire.
