The Netherlands has imposed a fine of 290 million euros on Uber, which has been found to have "seriously" violated the General Data Protection Regulation of the EU.
The Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber 290 million euros for sending European drivers' personal data to the United States in violation of European Union (EU) rules.
The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) announced that Uber was fined for transferring driver data to the US in violation of Union laws.
The statement stated that Uber did not properly protect various personal data of taxi drivers in Europe, such as bank accounts, taxi licenses, locations, photos, payment information, identification documents, criminal and medical records, and sent them to the US.
"A SERIOUS VIOLATION"
The statement emphasized that Uber's application was found to be a "serious violation" of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and therefore Uber was fined 290 million euros. The statement reminded that Uber's headquarters in Europe is in the Netherlands and that the investigation was initiated based on complaints from drivers in France, and it was stated that the company has terminated the data transfer in question.
