The incident occurred on Saturday, October 19, at the neighborhood market established in Cumhuriyet Mahallesi in the center of Kale district. Halil Seliz (42), who was reported to be working as a baker in the district and allegedly experiencing family troubles for some time, poured gasoline on himself in front of the crowd shopping at the neighborhood market. Upon the notification of nearby citizens, police, health, and fire teams were dispatched to the area.

When police teams could not convince Halil Seliz, who wanted his daughter, who had run away from home, to be brought back, his wife was called to the scene. Despite the efforts of his wife and the police teams, Halil Seliz, who could not be persuaded, set himself on fire with the gasoline he had drunk some of and poured on himself after being informed that his daughter did not want to return home. After the first intervention at the scene, Halil Seliz was first taken to Kale State Hospital and later transferred to the Burn Unit of İzmir Bozyaka Training and Research Hospital. Halil Seliz, who was treated there, passed away last night despite all the interventions of the doctors.

It was learned that Halil Seliz's funeral would be buried in Kale Cemetery after the funeral prayer to be held at the neighborhood mosque following the Friday prayer.
