On the 39th day of the US-Israel-Iran war, as conflicts continue, the US decided to deploy the 142nd Field Artillery Brigade to the Middle East. This move by the Trump administration, which has been in the spotlight for its threats against the Tehran government, stands out as a new step that increases military tension in the region.
On the 39th day of the US-Israel-Iran war, as the clashes intensified, a new step came from Washington that could affect the balances on the ground. While retaliation missiles were fired in succession from Tehran towards the Gulf and Israel, the US military deployment decision drew attention.
Republican Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas announced on his social media account that personnel from the 142nd Field Artillery Brigade of Arkansas have been deployed to the Middle East. In his post, Cotton stated, “Today, brave men and women of Arkansas’s 142nd Field Artillery Brigade are heading to the Middle East.”
THREE CRITICAL SCENARIOS ON THE TABLE
Experts are focusing on three main scenarios for a possible US ground operation. These include the capture of the islands around the Strait of Hormuz, advancing from the southern coastline, and an entry from the west. However, it is stated that each scenario carries serious military and political risks. The possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz puts pressure on Washington, while the control of Iranian islands is also among the discussed options. However, experts indicate that especially the capture of Hormuz Island is not sustainable and that maintaining control would be extremely difficult. Additionally, it is emphasized that cutting off Iran's daily oil exports of approximately 1.5 million barrels could lead to serious fluctuations in the global energy market. Among the 42 islands located in southern Iran, Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa islands stand out as geopolitically sensitive areas.
WHAT IS THE 142ND ARTILLERY BRIGADE?
The unit in question is known as the 142nd Field Artillery Brigade, which is part of the Arkansas National Guard. The brigade, based in Fayetteville, uses the M142 HIMARS and M270A1 multiple launch rocket systems, which stand out for their high mobility and precision strike capability. These systems play a critical role in modern battlefields, providing significant advantages in neutralizing deep targets.
ONE OF THE CRITICAL FORCES OF THE ARMY
The 142nd Field Artillery Brigade holds a special and strategic position for the US Army as it is one of only 8 field artillery brigades within the National Guard. Established in 1893, the unit has served in many major conflicts involving the US, including World War I and II, the Korean War, Operation Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, except for the Vietnam War. The unit has also played an active role in natural disasters such as winter storms in Arkansas, water distribution efforts, and the Rogers tornado in 2024.
HARSH STATEMENTS FROM TRUMP
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump made harsh statements against Iran during a press conference held at the White House. Trump stated that he hoped an agreement would be reached with Iran by 8:00 PM Eastern Time on Tuesday, and otherwise, “The whole country could be destroyed in one night.”
