The HMPV virus, which started spreading in China, and the flu cases that have swept across Europe have also affected Greece. It has been reported that there is a significant increase in respiratory infections in the neighboring country.

7 PEOPLE IN INTENSIVE CARE, 1 PERSON DEAD

In the weekly report of the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY), it was announced that between December 30, 2024, and January 5, 2025, 7 people were treated in intensive care due to laboratory-confirmed flu, and 1 person lost their life.

ABOVE SEASONAL THRESHOLD VALUE

The report stated that the ages of the 7 patients in intensive care ranged from 19 to 81, and that these patients consisted of three men and four women. It was noted that the positivity rate of flu cases remained above the seasonal threshold value.

WHAT IS HMPV?

HMPV is from the same virus family as RSV, a seasonal virus that can also cause colds and lung infections. Common symptoms of the infection include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. However, this infection can progress to bronchitis (inflammation of the air tubes leading to the lungs) or pneumonia (filling of the air sacs in the lungs with fluid).
