After a brief improvement in the global trade war, the European Union, which stands against the recent policies of the United States, plans to take its own economic measures in retaliation. Following China, the European Union is also preparing to retaliate against the United States. The EU Commission issued a statement regarding the steps to be taken if the disagreement over cars and mutual tariffs with the US cannot be resolved through negotiation.
€95 BILLION SANCTIONS PACKAGE
The statement indicated that a list of products subject to countermeasures has been prepared in case the negotiations between the EU and the US do not result in a mutually beneficial outcome and the removal of US tariffs. "The list covers imports from the US worth €95 billion, encompassing a wide range of industrial and agricultural products," the statement said, noting that restrictions on the export of certain EU steel scrap and chemical products worth €4.4 billion to the US would also be included. The statement emphasized that the EU's priority is to find a mutually beneficial and balanced solution through negotiations within the framework of the US's decision to partially suspend tariffs for 90 days.
"WE ARE PREPARING FOR COUNTERMEASURES"
The statement reminded that the EU continues to prepare possible countermeasures to protect its consumers and industry in the event that no result is achieved in the negotiations, and it was noted that the EU would also initiate an official consultation process at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding cars and car parts and mutual tariffs against the US. Furthermore, the list of US products subject to EU measures consists of 218 pages.
HEALTH EQUIPMENT ALSO ON THE LIST
The list includes a wide range of products such as wine, fish, horses, airplanes, cars and parts, chemicals, machines, and health equipment. At this stage, a one-month consultation process has begun with EU member countries and European companies regarding the products on the list. US President Donald Trump had imposed a 25% customs duty on steel and aluminum imports from EU countries. Later, Trump announced that he had imposed a 20% mutual tariff on EU products. The US also imposed a 25% tariff on all vehicle and car parts imports.
