As winter makes its presence felt in the eastern provinces, eyes are turned to Istanbul. The meteorology department expects snow in the east on December 1, while experts indicate that the likelihood of snowfall in Istanbul throughout December is low, and that the real chance of cold and snow will strengthen in the second half of January 2026.
With the end of November, the harsh winter has started to knock on the door across Turkey. As December begins, snowfall has particularly shown itself in the eastern regions. The General Directorate of Meteorology announced in its latest assessments that snowfall will be effective in many eastern provinces as of December 1.
WILL IT SNOW IN ISTANBUL?
The intense snowfall in Bolu during the day has turned citizens' attention to Istanbul. Following this scene in the city, the question "Will it snow in Istanbul?" has come back to the agenda. Meteorology Expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen, who evaluated the issue, stated that the expected news for Istanbul residents will be delayed a bit.
DECEMBER WILL BE MILD
According to Şen, while there is a possibility of snow in Istanbul and surrounding provinces after December 20, this probability is currently low. The expert noted that December is generally expected to be mild this year, stating that it is difficult to see snowfall, especially in the western part of the city, in the near term.
IT WILL HIT IN JANUARY
Prof. Dr. Şen concluded his evaluations by stating that the likelihood of snowfall will significantly increase in the second half of January 2026, and that a cold air wave coming from the poles will be effective during this period.
