The court in Italy has ordered journalist Giulia Cortese to pay 5,000 euros in compensation for mocking Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's height. The court also imposed a fine of 1,200 euros on Cortese.
In a court in Milan, Italy, a decision was made in the case against journalist Giulia Cortese, who mocked Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's height. The court ruled that Cortese must pay a compensation of 5,000 euros for her tweet in October 2021, where she made fun of Meloni's appearance.
COMPENSATION WILL BE DONATED TO CHARITIES
The court also imposed a deferred fine of 1,200 euros on Cortese. While Cortese has the right to appeal the fine, Meloni's lawyer stated that the entire compensation will be donated to charities.
WHAT HAPPENED?
At the time, Meloni, the leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, who was in opposition, reacted to Cortese's tweet, where she posted a photo of herself with fascist leader Benito Mussolini in the background. In her social media post, Cortese used the words, "You can't scare me, Giorgia Meloni. After all, you're only 1.2 meters tall. I can't even see you." Meloni later took legal action against Cortese.
Meloni's height is reported to be between 1.58-1.63 meters.
