The leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Nikos Christodoulides, speaking about the reactions from Turkey and the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Tufan Erhürman, regarding the maritime jurisdiction agreement signed with Lebanon, stated that they are ready to negotiate to determine maritime borders based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA), Nikos Christodoulides, responded to the reactions from Turkey and the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Tufan Erhürman, regarding the maritime jurisdiction agreement signed with Lebanon.
"WE ARE READY TO NEGOTIATE TO DETERMINE MARITIME BORDERS WITH TURKEY"
Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulides stated that his response to the statements from Ankara was to announce to the public that the GCA is "ready to sit at the table to determine maritime borders with Turkey within the framework of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea." Christodoulides pointed out that the Turkish side expressed confidence in its own theses, saying, "Then let’s sit at the table together, talk, and determine our maritime borders as we do with neighboring states; we will continue to do this."
"WE ARE READY TO RESUME TALKS FROM THE POINT LEFT IN CRANS MONTANA"
Christodoulides reiterated that they are "ready even tomorrow" to resume talks from the point where they were cut off in Crans Montana, as he expressed during his first meeting with TRNC President Tufan Erhürman. Christodoulides stated that this is important for reaching a viable and workable solution to the Cyprus issue.
"WE CAN BENEFIT FROM THE GAINS OF THE NEGOTIATION PROCESS"
Christodoulides reminded that he conveyed to Erhürman that he was ready to sit at the table without looking for any excuses even during the presidency of the EU Council. The Greek Cypriot leader said, "We can restart the talks and reach a solution based on the agreed framework by benefiting from the gains of the negotiation process."
