LEBANON MOTION ACCEPTED IN TBMM

The Lebanon motion signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was discussed in the General Assembly of TBMM. The motion, which foresees the extension of TSK's mission in Lebanon for another 2 years, was accepted in the voting at the Assembly.

EXTENDED FOR 1 MORE YEAR IN 2024

Moreover, the motion reminded that within the framework of the permission granted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 1701 adopted on August 11, 2006, and the TBMM's decision dated September 5, 2006, Turkey has contributed to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) with Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) elements, and that the duration of this permission was last extended by TBMM for 1 year starting from October 31, 2024.

"SERVING TO MAINTAIN PEACE AND STABILITY"

The motion stated that Turkey plays an important role in the effective conduct of peacekeeping operations through its contributions to UNIFIL, saying, "In this context, Turkey's contribution has served to increase visibility among all segments of Lebanese society, both within the United Nations system and on regional and global scales, as well as to maintain its policy aimed at preserving peace and stability. Therefore, it is considered important to continue our contribution to UNIFIL."

The motion noted that UNIFIL's mandate has been extended for the last time until December 31, 2026, by the UNSC decision, and it was reported that it was decided to gradually begin the liquidation of UNIFIL by 2027.

The motion recorded the following: "Considering our bilateral relations with Lebanon and the security conditions in the region, in accordance with the UNSC Resolution No. 2790 regarding the extension and gradual liquidation of UNIFIL's mandate, the number, scope, and amount of Turkish Armed Forces elements to be determined by the President will participate in UNIFIL for an additional 2 years starting from October 31, 2025, within the framework of the principles established by UNSC Resolution No. 1701 and TBMM Resolution No. 880, and necessary arrangements will be made by the President in accordance with Article 92 of the Constitution."
