A passenger on an American Airlines flight attacked the cabin crew. The incident occurred on a flight from Savannah to Miami, where 31-year-old Delange Augustin lost control shortly after takeoff.
Footage from the incident shows Augustin punching cabin crew members and attacking the airplane door. The assailant, who was subdued with difficulty by passengers, was taken into custody by FBI agents.
According to police sources, Augustin was traveling to Haiti with his sister Medjina. According to his sister's statement to the police, they were traveling "to escape spiritual attacks."
On the flight operated by Envoy, Augustin suddenly began to tremble and shout. He kicked a cabin crew member who was trying to help. As the situation worsened, the captain decided to turn the plane back to Savannah. During this time, Augustin kicked the seat of the passenger in front of him, causing damage.
Rob Rosenberg, a passenger on the flight, told CBS Miami, "He was exhibiting incredible violence. He kicked and punched another passenger's seat, completely deforming it. It was one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen in my life."
After the plane landed in Savannah, Augustin lost control again and ran towards the front of the aircraft. The assailant, who was subdued by three passengers, was also reported to have swallowed prayer beads during the incident. His sister said this was done because it was a "power weapon in spiritual warfare."
The FBI took Augustin into custody on charges of "interfering with the duties of the flight crew." The investigation is ongoing.
