Security camera footage has emerged showing a caregiver physically abusing 88-year-old dementia patient John Attard in the Kent region of England. The footage shows 42-year-old caregiver Bilikesu Olagunju throwing the elderly man around like a "rag doll."
Olagunju's job was to provide personal care for Attard and prepare his breakfast. However, the footage shows her forcibly undressing the elderly man, dragging him despite him falling to the ground, pouring jam into his coffee despite knowing he is diabetic, and threatening to hit him.
Attard's son Chris obtained the footage through a hidden camera he installed in the home. The incident occurred on December 24, 2022, on Christmas Eve. The next day, the elderly man was found unconscious and bleeding at home and was taken to the hospital. He passed away ten days later.
The caregiver pleaded guilty to charges of mistreating and neglecting an elderly person. However, Woolwich Crown Court sentenced Olagunju to only six weeks in prison. This sentence was suspended for 18 months, and she was also ordered to complete 50 hours of community service.
Chris Attard described this sentence as "an insult."
"This person could still be treating the elderly in the same way if it weren't for those cameras. The sentence carries no deterrent effect," he said.
According to the footage presented to the court, the caregiver arrived at the elderly man's home at 11:20 AM. She tried to force Attard to stand up, but he slipped and fell to the ground. She then undressed him in front of the window where he could be seen from the street.
While trying to lift the elderly man from the ground, she forcibly yanked and dragged him by the collar. Despite the warning from her company to "call an ambulance, do not touch," she ignored this instruction and continued to forcibly lift the man. During this time, she also complained, "You should have sent a man here."
Despite Attard repeatedly saying, "I am in pain," Olagunju continued her threats:
"I will hit you, I will take you to the hospital, I will report you to the police."
Moreover, despite knowing that the elderly man was diabetic, she deliberately poured jam into his coffee. She also pulled the table away, preventing the elderly man from reaching his food, and spilled hot coffee on him.
An autopsy could not prove that the death was directly caused by the caregiver. However, Chris Attard stated that his father's condition rapidly deteriorated after this incident and that the pain on his face was clearly visible in the footage.
"She lifts him like a rag doll. My father's face was contorted in pain," he said.
Prosecutor James Benson described the caregiver's behavior as "harsh, rude, and indifferent." He emphasized that Olagunju exploited Attard's old age and helplessness.
