Following the recent announcement by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that the military service duration will be shortened, the first concrete step has been taken. The government approved a draft law that envisions reducing the mandatory military service period from 24 months to 18 months. Soldiers currently serving will complete their 2-year service period according to the existing law.
The Armenian government, approved a bill that foresees reducing the mandatory military service period from 24 months to 18 months.
According to the bill, the winter draft will begin in January 2026. If the changes are also approved by the parliament, the young people drafted this winter will serve 18 months in the army.
THOSE UNDER ARMS WILL COMPLETE 2 YEARS
In the regulation that will not be applied retroactively, soldiers currently under arms will complete their 2-year service period according to the existing law.
PASHINYAN HAD ANNOUNCED
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had previously stated that the military service period would be shortened and, in parallel, expenditures in the defense budget would also be reduced.
