Due to the threat posed to the environment and public health by the uncollected garbage in the Konak, Buca, and Karabağlar districts of İzmir, the Ministry of Interior has assigned inspectors. Two inspectors sent to İzmir will request information and documents from the municipalities regarding the garbage issue. Additionally, the Ministry of Interior has sent a letter to three municipalities emphasizing that the uncollected garbage is causing serious environmental and health problems.
The garbage problem, which citizens in İzmir complain about by saying "No one hears our voices, we are condemned to filth," is increasingly escalating. Following claims that the uncollected garbage in the districts of Konak, Buca, and Karabağlar threatens the environment and public health, the Ministry of Interior took action. The ministry assigned two civil inspectors to İzmir to request information and documents regarding the ongoing garbage issue.
INVESTIGATION OF 3 MUNICIPALITIES
An investigation has been initiated regarding the municipalities of Konak, Buca, and Karabağlar, which are claimed to be experiencing severe garbage problems.
MINISTRY ASSIGNED EXPERIENCED NAMES
One of the assigned inspectors, Mehmet Fatih Çelikel, had previously served as the secretary-general of the Van Metropolitan Municipality, which was appointed a trustee. The other inspector, Assoc. Dr. Ahmet Apan, has held various district governor positions and served as the Deputy General Director of the Migration Management, and is also known for his academic studies on "Administrative Law in Turkey."
LETTER FROM THE MINISTRY TO MUNICIPALITIES
Moreover, in a letter sent by the ministry to the municipalities, it was stated that especially in the districts of Buca, Karabağlar, and Konak, the garbage is not being collected regularly by the district municipalities. It was also claimed that the collected garbage is not being accepted by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality's solid waste disposal facilities.
The letter emphasized that this situation leads to serious environmental and health problems, stating the following:
"The formation of garbage piles poses a threat to environmental and public health, and due to the irregular collection of garbage, areas where waste is left uncontrollably by citizens threaten human health, leading to the rapid spread of diseases, soil pollution, contamination of surface and groundwater, the release of unpleasant odors into the environment, and pest and insect problems. It was noted that health issues that may arise from the failure to collect garbage could have severe consequences."
