Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, the newly elected Miss Universe representing Denmark, is under intense criticism for using a racist word in a video she shared on social media. Theilvig, who won the 73rd Miss Universe pageant held in Mexico City on November 16, where 120 beauty queen candidates competed, was seen as a victory for traditional beauty supporters after the 2023 pageant, which included married, plus-size, and transgender contestants. Theilvig, who sang Jay-Z's 'Empire State of Mind' in a video shared from the Empire State Building, faced backlash on social media for using a racist word. Users demanded an apology and the return of her crown. Neither the Miss Universe organization nor Theilvig has yet provided an official response to this controversy. It is believed that this incident may go unpunished due to the organization's first transgender CEO, Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip, who has previously made controversial statements regarding diversity and inclusion. In a leaked video, Jakrajutatip stated, "Trans women, married women, divorced women can compete but cannot win. This is a communication strategy." The CEO recently claimed that the competition has "already reached perfect evolution with blondes and blue-eyed contestants." This year's competition saw a return to tradition after a trend of increasing inclusivity in recent years, with the crown being awarded to a female contestant. This was interpreted on social media as a "return to normalcy." Theilvig, 21, is a dance contestant and law student. The finalists in the competition were asked questions on topics such as leadership and resilience. When asked, "How would you live if no one judged you?" Theilvig responded, "I wouldn't change anything; I live every day to the fullest," emphasizing that she "wants change and is making history." Theilvig became the first contestant from Denmark to win the Miss Universe crown.
