EARLY ELECTIONS TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 17TH

Faye stated that early elections will be held on November 17th and said, "By dissolving the parliament, I have requested the institutional means that will enable me to materialize the systemic transformation promised to the people."

Faye emphasized that the ruling party and the opposition members of parliament were unable to work in harmony and stated that they need to enter a new phase during his term. The opposition accused President Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of "manipulating the institutions to serve their own political interests."

Faye, who had no political experience, emerged victorious with 54.2% of the votes in the first round of the election held on March 24th. At the age of 44, Faye became not only the youngest elected president of Senegal but also of Africa. Faye also made history as the first opposition presidential candidate to be elected in the first round in Senegal. Taking office on April 2nd after taking the oath, Faye appointed Sonko as the prime minister the next day. Faye had promised to tackle economic difficulties and fight against corruption in the country.
