In the Safranbolu district of Karabük, a saffron harvesting event was organized in the village of Yukarıçiftlik as part of the 9th Saffron Festival. At the event, saffron rice and black soup were served.
DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN TOURISTS FLOODED IN
After the rainy weather, the fields were covered in mud, negatively affecting the saffron harvest. In addition to being used in many areas such as dye, food, cosmetics, medicine, and gastronomy, saffron, which has many effects such as cell renewal, memory enhancement, asthma and respiratory diseases, digestion, and gum strengthening, continues to attract domestic and foreign tourists who want to see the plant in its natural habitat.
IT WILL BE SOLD FOR 600 THOUSAND LIRA PER KILOGRAM
The saffron, which has been registered with a geographical indication by the European Union Commission, will be sold for 600 thousand lira from this year's harvest.
"WE COULDN'T COLLECT A LOT OF SAFFRON FLOWERS DUE TO THE RAIN"
Saffron producer İsmail Yılmaz made evaluations during the 9th Saffron Festival. Stating that heavy rains were effective during the festival period, Yılmaz said, "This year we are experiencing rain during the Saffron Festival, it is raining. Therefore, we couldn't collect a lot of saffron flowers in the field. Because when we put the guests in the fields, the flowers have difficulty blooming the next day due to the mud. For this reason, we celebrated the saffron flower festival without collecting much saffron in the fields," he said.
Yılmaz stated that they have been collecting saffron flowers for about 8-10 days, saying, "A lot of rain has fallen in the region during this period. Hopefully, if the sun comes out in 1-2 days, which seems to be the case next week, we can regularly collect saffron flowers for a month," he said.
Yılmaz noted that they sold the kilogram of saffron for 450 thousand lira for the 2024 product, stating, "The 2025 harvest is likely to be seen at around 600 thousand lira. I believe we will sell it at these prices when the new product comes out," he said.
