In Istanbul, the trial of 47 defendants, who are accused of transferring emergency infant patients to private hospitals' neonatal units with which they had previously agreed, leading to their deaths and unjust profits, has been postponed to tomorrow for the continuation of the defendants' testimonies. In today's hearing held at the courthouse's conference hall by the Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court, 22 detained defendants, including Fırat Sarı, 20 non-detained defendants, and the lawyers of the parties were present. Some non-detained defendants connected to the hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) from courthouses in their respective cities. CAUGHT ATTENTION WITH A QUOTE FROM THE SERIES "VALLEY OF THE WOLVES"After the statement of detained defendant Hasan Basri Gök, it was Deniz Korkmaz's turn. Korkmaz began his speech by saying that he has been working in the neonatal intensive care unit for 7 years. During the hearing, Korkmaz's words from the famous series 'Valley of the Wolves' drew attention. The presiding judge asked, "You said, 'Stealing from the state is more honorable than stealing from the nation.' Why did you say that?" Korkmaz replied, "Yes, I said it. There is a series called 'Valley of the Wolves,' it's a famous quote. If you look, you will see." QUESTIONS ABOUT MONEY TRANSFERSIn the afternoon session of the hearing, when detained defendant Deniz Korkmaz was asked about the money transfer records mentioned in the indictment, he stated that the amounts they received from the hospitals were low, so some businesses in the hospitals sent them money. WAS DENIZ KORKMAZ THE FIRST TO FILE A COMPLAINT TO CIMER?Korkmaz noted that he was the one who made the CIMER complaint mentioned in the investigation, but he was also the one who was arrested, stating, "I am absolutely not regretful, I have no responsibility. I did not intend to harm any patient's life. The court does not have any accusations regarding this either." When asked about the company he owns, named GMZ Health Services, Korkmaz claimed that he did not establish the company, but that detained defendant Fırat Sarı had opened this company in his name, and he was unaware that it was such a large and problematic matter. Korkmaz argued that the money sent to him was not for organizational activities but because the salaries taken from the hospital were low. "I DID IT TO DRAW ATTENTION"Korkmaz, who claimed that he was the one who uncovered this case, said, "The complaint that initiated the investigation is my CIMER complaint. If I were afraid, I wouldn't have done such a thing." When asked how Korkmaz learned that defendant Fırat Sarı was convicted of the PKK terrorist organization, Korkmaz stated, "I made the complaint to draw attention. I think I was successful." In response, Sarı's lawyer requested that Korkmaz be complained about for spreading this information under the "Law on the Reintegration of Offenders." THE HEARING WILL CONTINUE TOMORROWThe hearing, which lasted approximately 9 hours and included the testimonies of 5 defendants, has been postponed to tomorrow at 09:30 for the continuation of the defendants' defenses.
