A school located in Fatih Silivrikapı was evacuated due to a reported natural gas leak.
In an elementary school located in Fatih, a natural gas leak suspicion arose due to the noise and smoke coming from the boiler room. The school administration evacuated the students as a precaution, while a large number of police, fire, and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. Upon inspection by the teams, it was determined that there was no gas leak posing a danger and that the smoke was caused by a malfunction in the boiler room.
NO GAS LEAK DETECTED
The incident occurred around 1:00 PM at the elementary school on Burhanbey Street in Silivrikapı Neighborhood. Allegedly, the intense steam and noise coming from the boiler room in the basement of the school raised suspicions of a natural gas leak, leading to the evacuation of the school. Following the notification, a large number of fire, medical, and police teams were dispatched to the scene. The evacuated students were picked up by their parents. Fire teams that arrived at the scene determined that there was no fire. Inspections conducted by natural gas and municipal teams also confirmed that there was no gas leak. It was learned that the intense smoke and noise were caused by a safety system in boiler systems that activates when pressure rises. It was stated that necessary investigations regarding the incident are ongoing.
'WE ARE HANDING OVER OUR LIVES HERE'
A parent who came to pick up their child from school said, "I am sure they are doing their best. We are handing over our lives here with our children. I call on the authorities, please take a look. If something needs to be done, let it be done. Of course, we were very scared. Just look, is there a mother who isn't crying? Their lives are here too, and there is nothing we can do. It can happen to anyone, there are explosions in our homes too," they said.
'NO NEGATIVE SITUATION EXISTS'
Musa Otluoğlu, a Mechanical Engineer working in the Fatih Municipality's Department of Science Affairs, stated, "In boiler systems, there is a phenomenon we call a safety valve. There is a safety valve to prevent high pressure in the devices. When the pressure increases, it releases and discharges steam. During this steam discharge, it makes a sound like water. My colleagues interpreted this as a fire. A malfunction in the boiler room is quite a normal situation that can happen continuously. We have conducted the necessary checks, and there is no negative situation. We have directed the relevant colleagues, and necessary actions will be taken," he expressed.
