Professor Dr. Ersen Aydın Yağmur, a faculty member at Manisa Celal Bayar University (MCBÜ) Alaşehir Vocational School, has identified a new species of scorpion in Beyşehir district of Konya as a result of 21 years of field studies. This new species, found on Hacıakif Island located at the foothills of Dedegöl Mountain and in Lake Beyşehir, has been introduced to the scientific community under the name 'Euscorpius gulhanimae'. The two-colored structure of the new scorpion species and the number of trichobothria on its patella, which is the highest level within its genus, are noteworthy. With this discovery, the number of known scorpion species in Turkey has increased to 49, while the number of species belonging to the Euscorpius genus has risen to 17. The new species was also featured in the scientific journal 'Euscorpius', which publishes articles on scorpions in the USA, on August 19, 2024.
"I NAMED IT IN HONOR OF MY WIFE WHO SUPPORTED MY WORK"
Professor Dr. Ersen Aydın Yağmur, who identified the new scorpion species, stated, "I discovered this species during my field studies. I named it 'Euscorpius gulhanimae' in honor of my wife Gülhanım Yağmur for her support in my work." He emphasized that the scorpion he collected from within a pine forest near Lake Beyşehir is a new species for Turkey, saying, "When I collected the samples and conducted the studies, I noticed that the number of trichobothria on the patella was higher than that of known species. This is a two-colored species. In this respect, it clearly differs from known species." The newly discovered scorpion species is preserved in the Zoology Museum of MCBÜ Alaşehir Vocational School.
