Yesterday, 47 defendants, including Fırat Sarı and İlker Gönen, who caused the deaths of many babies in Istanbul, appeared before the judge for the first time, 22 of whom are in custody. The first session of the trial, which will last for 5 days, continues on its second day. Defendant Hasan Basri Gök, a nurse of gang leader Fırat Sarı, confessed that Sarı sent babies to hospitals without reporting them to 112 through doctors he knew, and that Serdar Yüksel earned 5,000 lira from out-of-town transfers. REACTION TO FAHRETTİN KOCAWhile the trial is also trending on social media, the focus of the reactions was on Fahrettin Koca, who served as the Minister of Health during the period when the events took place. Koca's failure to make any statements regarding the issue and the court process became a topic of discussion. While former Minister Koca's statement was awaited, some users on social media expressed their reactions by saying, "Come out and speak." "ROTTEN APPLE OPERATION"Regarding the Newborn Gang scandal that shook Turkey, Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu recently made statements at the TBMM Planning and Budget Commission. Minister Memişoğlu used the following expressions regarding the 'Newborn Gang': "I would like to address the incident that has recently occurred in some newborn units in our country, which has deeply saddened us all. However, since it is a case that has been transferred to the judiciary and has moved from the investigation phase to the prosecution phase, I cannot go into details. For us, the name of this operation is the 'rotten apple operation,' and the name of the gang is the 'gang of those who have not taken a lesson from humanity.' Our concern for the health and safety of our children is beyond everything. The oath we doctors take is to protect life and prioritize human health above all else. We have not allowed, nor will we allow, anything that contradicts this oath. As the Ministry of Health, we clearly state that we will not permit practices that could endanger the health of our citizens. As always, we have fought against illegality and irregularities and will continue to do so." NEW INSPECTION MODELFollowing the scandals in the newborn departments, Memişoğlu pointed out that they have implemented a new inspection model that includes evidence-based medical practices and risk management in addition to administrative inspections with scientists. Memişoğlu stated, "We are applying this system, which we started with the Newborn Intensive Care Inspection and Evaluation Scientific Commission, in all branches as well. In just 2024, we conducted 46,160 regular and 7,318 extraordinary inspections. As a result of these inspections, we issued numerous 'activity stoppage' and 'administrative fines'; we also filed criminal complaints," he said.
