Intel has decided to lay off 15% of its workforce under the leadership of new CEO Lip-Bu Tan. It is stated that the number of employees, which is 108,900 at the end of 2024, will decrease to 75,000 by the end of 2025, with 2,400 people being laid off in Oregon. The technology sector has gained momentum in AI-focused transformation with similar steps taken by Microsoft and Meta.
The technology giant Intel has laid off thousands of employees. This decision was one of the first major steps under the new CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took office in March. Tan stated the following in his announcement:
"This transformation will take some time, but we see significant opportunities to enhance our competitiveness, increase our profitability, and provide long-term value to our investors."
A MORE AGILE ORGANIZATION IS TARGETED
Intel emphasized that the purpose of this downsizing is to create a management model that is faster in decision-making, simpler, and more horizontal. The company, which had 108,900 employees at the end of 2024, plans to reduce this number to only 75,000 personnel in its core business areas by the end of 2025. This figure will include both direct layoffs and natural resignations.
According to the official application in Oregon, approximately 2,400 employees will be laid off in this state alone.
CUTS IN THE SECTOR ARE GROWING
This step taken by Intel is part of the overall downsizing trend in the technology world. In 2025, Microsoft laid off approximately 9,000 employees in July. Meta (the parent company of Facebook) also laid off about 5% of its total staff at the beginning of the year.
Experts believe that these developments indicate that technology giants want to accelerate their AI-centered transformation by reducing costs.
