Four children working at a pizzeria, Döne Bozdemir, was shot and killed by her estranged husband Gafer Bozdemir last Saturday at the Sıhhiye Metro Station exit in the Çankaya district of Ankara. Döne Bozdemir was buried in Ankara. Gafer Bozdemir, who was detained after the incident, was arrested by the duty judge. SHE HAD FILED COMPLAINTS AGAINST HER HUSBAND MULTIPLE TIMESIt was learned that Döne Bozdemir filed a lawsuit on September 12, 2023, to divorce her husband on the grounds that he had been violent towards her and their children, and also requested a restraining order and electronic monitoring. It was revealed that Gafer Özdemir was ordered by the Ankara 12th Family Court to stay within 1000 meters of his wife for a period of 6 months and to be electronically monitored, and that the restraining order was renewed after the expiration of the period. Despite this, it was learned that Gafer Bozdemir constantly followed his wife, and 2 days before the incident, he was sentenced to 3 days of forced imprisonment by the court for approaching his wife again. Despite the prison sentence, Gafer Bozdemir, who did not surrender and was being monitored electronically, shot his wife at the metro exit. "THEY TRIED TO TAKE HER TO THE FOREST AND BURN HER"Ercan Çelebi, Döne Bozdemir's brother, claimed that Gafer Bozdemir constantly subjected his sister and children to violence, saying, "My sister, who has been married for 23 years, took on all the responsibilities of the household after the first 5 years of marriage. She worked and took care of her children. Despite this, she constantly suffered from violence. Last year, that man took my sister to the forest. My sister was beaten and they tried to burn her that day. He threw my sister out of the house at midnight. We took him to court, we wanted a peaceful divorce, we didn't want anyone to get hurt; but despite this, that man constantly threatened her. He had already threatened her many times while they were married, saying 'your death will be at my hands'. That's why we wanted him to be electronically monitored and a restraining order to be issued. Our state fulfilled this request of ours; but afterwards, they didn't keep their promise. My sister lost her life because of negligence with a single blind bullet. In the heart of Ankara, in Sıhhiye, he argued with that man for 15-20 minutes, he had an electronic monitoring device on his leg, and he shot my sister. That man had a 3-day prison sentence. If he had been imprisoned at that moment, 4 children wouldn't have been left orphaned, my sister wouldn't have lost her life, and we wouldn't have experienced this pain," he said. 'SHE WOULD HAVE SURVIVED IF THE PRISON SENTENCE HAD BEEN ENFORCED'Döne Bozdemir's lawyer, Pakize Narin Ergan, said that the suspect, who was being monitored electronically, chose the metro as the crime scene in order not to be warned by going near Döne Bozdemir. Ergan stated, "After we took the case, we conveyed our necessary protection requests. After the expiration of the period, we continued the process by renewing it. However, during this process, Döne Hanım told us that her husband violated the protection orders, constantly called and threatened her. Upon this, when we could prove that the person violated the protection order, we filed a complaint. The person was subjected to a 3-day forced imprisonment. Döne Hanım told our team of lawyers before the hearing, 'The person approached me a lot last Tuesday. The police called me and said that Gafer was wandering around Sıhhiye. They told me to be careful about this.' On the day of the incident, the person approached my client despite being monitored electronically. Because unfortunately, there was no notification that the person approached my client that day. Maybe if the police had informed my client that Gafer Bozdemir approached her, this situation would not have happened, or if that forced imprisonment had been enforced, our client would have survived," she said. VIDEOS OF HIM DRINKING ALCOHOL WITH HIS CHILDREN WERE RELEASEDLawyer Ergan stated that her client stated in her divorce petition that two of her fingers were broken by her husband and that he also subjected their children to violence. Ergan said that they also submitted videos of Gafer Bozdemir drinking alcohol with his 6 and 13-year-old children as evidence in the divorce case file.
