A truck carrying rhesus monkeys used in laboratory experiments overturned in the state of Mississippi, USA, causing panic. Authorities warned the public that some of the animals may carry viruses such as hepatitis C and Covid-19.
"DO NOT APPROACH"
The accident occurred on Tuesday on Interstate 59 in Jasper County. The truck carrying monkeys being transported from Tulane University to Louisiana overturned. The Jasper County Sheriff's Office warned citizens, "Do not approach the animals, do not make contact," and asked them to report immediately if they are seen.
CAN ONLY BE HANDLED WITH PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Authorities stated that rhesus monkeys, which can weigh up to 18 kilograms, can exhibit aggressive behavior and can only be handled with protective equipment. After the accident, three of the escaped monkeys were "euthanized," while one is still reported missing.
Rhesus monkeys are commonly used in medical research due to their genetic similarities to humans. Experts warned that such incidents could increase the risk of potential zoonotic diseases. The U.S. Maritime Safety Agency (AMSA) is investigating the incident for "human error and violations of safety protocols."
