28-year-old Hüseyin Ulaş, who lives in Istanbul, lost 66 kilos in a short time to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a police officer, but had to leave school when he learned during a health screening that he was born with only one kidney.

LOST 66 KILOS IN 4.5 MONTHS

Ulaş, who wanted to be a police officer from a young age, did not give up on his dream when he was eliminated due to his weight during his first application for the police in 2019. In 2020, Ulaş decided to try again and set up a treadmill at home, losing 66 kilos in 4.5 months with an intense training regimen.

Despite losing his father during this process, Ulaş, who did not lose sight of his goal and prepared for the exams with determination, successfully passed all stages and was placed in the Bayburt Police Vocational Training Center (POMEM), completing the first weeks of the training process successfully.

LEARNED THE TRUTH DURING HEALTH SCREENING, SHATTERED HIS DREAMS

During the mandatory health checks, Ulaş learned from the ultrasound and tomography results that he was born without one kidney.

Having had no health complaints until that day and experiencing no issues while exercising or losing weight, Ulaş was deemed unfit for the police profession due to the regulation stating that being a single-kidney person was a barrier.

Although Ulaş struggled to accept the sudden loss of the goal he had worked for for years, he eventually learned that he could live a healthy life with one kidney.

"I DROPPED FROM 150 KILOS TO 84"

Hüseyin Ulaş stated that he reapplied for the police in October 2020 because he was eliminated due to his weight in the first attempt. He mentioned that he bought a treadmill for home because he needed to maintain his weight index until March, saying, "I lost a lot of weight in a short time with running. I started running in November, and during that time my father passed away, so I took a little break. I dropped from 150 kilos to 84 kilos in about 4.5 months."

Ulaş expressed that he felt one step closer to his dreams by maintaining his body mass index as a result of the weight he lost during the pre-health screening, and after this stage, he took the sports exams, where he was also successful.

Ulaş said, "During the health screening, because I had stretch marks on my body, the police brothers were saying to their friends, 'Look how much weight he lost for the police.' After passing this stage, there were sports exams around June, which I passed successfully. They called me for the interview, and on the exam day, the interview results were announced, and I had won Bayburt POMEM. It was also very close to the district where I grew up in Erzincan. After that, the education at the school began." he said.

"I THOUGHT THEY WERE JOKING"

Ulaş, explaining that they went to the hospital for a health screening while at the police school, recounted:

"While going through the necessary stages, they first told me during the ultrasound that I didn't have one kidney. I thought they were joking, then I went for a tomography. The doctor called me back. He had initially said it was valid due to the kidney, but then he said, 'I reviewed the regulations, you are not suitable.' I returned to school and talked to my police friends, and since there was no precedent decision, I realized that I would not be able to graduate as a police officer, so I left school."

Ulaş stated that he had never experienced any health issues until this age and was very surprised to learn that he was born with one kidney, saying, "When they first did the ultrasound, there is a margin of error, which gave me a little hope. Such a thing had never happened to me. I had never had any problems related to my kidney during my overweight period, and my mother was a nurse. Once the tomography result came out, I was convinced. Since it was not something caused by me, I had to accept that process. The first six months after leaving school were tough. I felt bad whenever I saw a police officer on the street. After that, I decided to set long-term goals for myself." he expressed.

"I FEEL A BITTERNESS INSIDE WHEN I SEE POLICE"

Ulaş noted that when he won the police school, his surroundings were very happy, and he continued: "While I was preparing for the exams, no one thought I would win or lose weight. When I won the school, I went to the village where I was born, and they welcomed me with joy. They were happy that 'for the first time, someone from our village will become a police officer.' I went to school and returned two months later. They didn't take me to the military due to health reasons. Even now, when I see a police officer and they ask for my ID, I feel a bitterness inside. It was very good news for the village, and I also contributed. Losing nearly 60 kilos is not in vain, but it remains a disappointment."

"I HAVEN'T FELT ANY PROBLEMS SO FAR"

Ulaş expressed that his doctor said it could be hereditary, but there had been no such occurrence in his family, concluding his words as follows:

"My doctor said that my other kidney has adapted very well, so having only one kidney does not pose a problem for me at the moment. 'As long as you take good care of it, it won't be a problem for you, it won't reduce your quality of life, but there are certain rules you need to follow.' he said. Such as drinking plenty of water, staying away from salt and alcohol. So far, I haven't felt any problems. It seems to be a rare situation. I also researched at school, and there was one more person like me who had one kidney in this way."
