The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Treasury Department decided yesterday to impose sanctions on numerous individuals and companies in China, India, and the United Arab Emirates. Those sanctioned include individuals facilitating the transportation of oil from Iran to China, crew management companies, and ships.
ARE MAXIMUM PRESSURES ON IRAN STARTING AGAIN?
The sanctions have sparked discussions about the possibility of the "Maximum Pressure" policy towards Iran being reinstated during President Donald Trump's previous administration. Iran reacted strongly to the decision, stating that Trump's reimplementation of this policy would "result in failure."
Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ismail Bakayi stated, "The new U.S. administration's decision to pressure the Iranian people by obstructing Iran's legal trade with its economic partners is an illegitimate, illegal step that involves violations, and is absolutely unjust and contrary to international rules." The U.S. sanctions do not directly prohibit ships from navigating in international waters, but they complicate operations by blocking access to necessary support services.
