The number of people who have lost their lives due to ongoing clashes along the border with Cambodia in Thailand has risen to 15, including 14 civilians. Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned that the conflicts could escalate into war.
Intense clashes that began yesterday between Thailand and Cambodia continue on the second day. In a statement from the Thai army, it was expressed that Cambodian troops are using multiple rocket launcher systems and heavy weapons near civilian settlements. It was reported that the evacuation of civilians living in the areas where clashes have intensified has been accelerated.
The statement included, "Cambodian forces are conducting continuous bombardments using heavy weapons, field artillery, and Russian-made BM-21 rocket systems. Thai troops are responding appropriately to the situation."
DEATH TOLL IN THAILAND RISES TO 15
In the latest statement from the Thai Ministry of Health, it was reported that the death toll in the ongoing clashes since yesterday has risen to 15, including 14 civilians, and the number of injured has increased to 46. In a statement from the Thai Ministry of Interior, it was reported that more than 100,000 civilians have been evacuated from their homes in the 4 provinces along the border.
CAMBODIA EVACUATED THE BORDER LINE
On the Cambodian side, while no clear statement has been made regarding the number of dead or injured, local authorities in the Oddar Meanchey region, located along the border, reported that 1 civilian has died, 5 people have been injured, and approximately 1,500 families have been evacuated. According to local media reports, more than 20,000 Cambodians have been evacuated from the border province of Preah Vihear in the north of the country.
"CLASHES COULD TURN INTO WAR"
Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned in a statement made in the capital Bangkok that the ongoing border clashes with Cambodia could escalate into a larger military conflict. Phumtham Wechayachai stated, "If the situation escalates, it could result in war. Although it is currently limited to clashes, we cannot ignore this possibility."
WARNING MESSAGE FROM TURKEY'S EMBASSY IN BANGKOK
Turkey's Embassy in Bangkok also issued a warning to Turkish citizens in the country. The statement said, "Dear citizens; In light of the developments at the Thailand-Cambodia border, it is respectfully announced that our citizens residing in/visiting the border areas and those planning to travel there should follow the warnings of the Thai authorities and exercise caution."
HOW DID THE THAILAND-CAMBODIA TENSION START?
The tension between the border troops of the two countries, which has been ongoing for some time, escalated yesterday after a Thai soldier stepped on a landmine and lost his leg. Following the incident, soldiers from both countries engaged in clashes at various border points, while the Thai army bombed military targets in Cambodia's border regions with 2 F-16 fighter jets yesterday. Thailand stated that the landmine in question was recently planted by Cambodian soldiers, while the Cambodian government denied this accusation. Following the increasing political tension, Thailand recalled its ambassador from Cambodia and expelled the Cambodian ambassador in Bangkok.
