In a hamlet in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari, 50 small livestock were killed and 30 sheep were injured or went missing when a wolf pack attacked a communal herd during the night. Villagers and shepherds intervened and drove the wolves away.
In the Yüksekova district of Hakkari, 50 sheep were killed in a herd attacked by wolves while grazing on the pasture.
According to the information obtained, the incident occurred last night in the Sasi hamlet of the Dilektaşı (Manis) village. When the common herd belonging to all villages was stationed in the hamlet during the night, a hungry wolf pack descending into the area plunged among the sheep. Attacking the herd under the cover of darkness and fog, the wolves killed nearly 50 small livestock. During the attack, the panicked herd scattered around, while approximately 30 sheep were either injured or lost in the mountainous area.
"VILLAGERS MOBILIZED"
Upon hearing sounds from the herd and dogs barking at midnight, the shepherds and village residents, suspecting something wrong, immediately ran to the hamlet area. The villagers managed to drive the wolves away from the area and started a search and rescue operation on the terrain at dawn. While the Yüksekova District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry teams were notified about the injured animals, it was learned that efforts continue in the rugged and mountainous region to find the missing animals.
FARMERS COMPLAIN ABOUT WOLF POPULATION
Village residents stated that the wolf population has increased recently in the region, and villagers who make a living from livestock, especially at night, experience great anxiety. It was expressed that the financial loss of the village community due to the dead animals is significant.
