The arrest of the young woman after her street interview was questioned to Justice Minister Tunç.

14.08.2024 15:11

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç, responding to a question about the young woman who was arrested following her statements in a street interview, said, "Freedom of thought is very important in a democratic country, but if this speech violates the rights and freedoms of others, there are sanctions for it in the criminal laws."

In an interview conducted on the streets regarding the closure of Instagram in Izmir, a person named Dilruba used harsh words against the AK Party government and was detained on charges of "insulting the President" and "inciting hatred and enmity towards the public" and was arrested and sent to prison by the duty judge.

"THERE ARE PENALTIES FOR THIS IN THE CRIMINAL LAW"

This development was asked to Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç. Speaking on CNN Türk on the occasion of the establishment of the AK Party, Tunç said in his statement regarding the issue, "Freedom of thought is very important in a democratic country, but if this speech violates the rights and freedoms of others, there are penalties for this in the criminal law."

ARE STREET INTERVIEWS BEING BANNED?

Justice Minister Tunç also clarified the allegations that street interviews will be banned, saying, "There is no ban on street interviews. Insulting through the press is a crime, just as insulting someone face to face is a crime. We expanded the scope of freedom of thought with the amendments we made in previous years. We implemented regulations that criticism statements will not be considered a crime. But this freedom has a limit. But if you speak in a way that incites hatred and enmity towards the public, the judiciary will intervene. It is the judicial authorities who will evaluate whether this is a crime or not."

WHAT DID THE YOUNG WOMAN WHO WAS ARRESTED SAY?

Dilruba Y. had said the following about the blocking of Instagram: "If we go from a parliamentary system and give the whole Republic of Turkey to one person, they will use it like their father's stable. Why should I mourn because an Arab died, it doesn't concern me. Saying 'I closed it and it's done' doesn't work. They pass a law overnight and want animals to die, they pass a law aimed at slaughtering animals in the name of Allah. One night, they withdraw from the Istanbul Convention. One night, they shut down Instagram. This is a coup they are doing. Shutting down social media is a coup. Passing a law on animal slaughter is a coup.

I also want to say to those who support this: you are idiots. Because you have entrusted all your freedom rights to one person, because you worship him as superior to God, because you support the closure of social media, because you support the killing of animals, you are all brainless idiots. I don't want any of what I said to be cut off."
