44-year-old Sandeep Purohit, who was visiting the Karnala Bird Sanctuary with his family, tragically lost his life due to an attack by a swarm of bees.
On Saturday morning, Sandeep, who was visiting the bird sanctuary with his wife and son, became the target of a defensive bee colony. During the sudden attack, seven tourists who were in the area at the same time also became targets of the bees. Many people, including Sandeep's wife and son, suffered painful bee stings.
Authorities responded to the area following multiple calls for help from the summit of Karnala Fort, where the sanctuary is located. An official stated, "We received information at 11:00 that there was an attack in the fort area and that there were many injured. It took us 45 minutes to reach the scene. The rescue team found those injured by bee stings and a man lying unconscious."
About 10 people were hiding on the ground while the aggressive bees were flying above them. Everyone was safely evacuated from the dangerous area, but Sandeep, who was lying on the ground, could not be saved. According to local media, Sandeep lost consciousness after falling and hitting his head during the chaos of the initial bee attack.
Sandeep, who was taken to Panvel Sub-District Hospital, could not be saved despite the interventions made. The official cause of death has not yet been announced, but authorities believe that Sandeep may have experienced cardiac arrest due to an allergic reaction.
Dr. Ashok Gite, the hospital director, stated that the exact cause of death can only be determined after a histopathological examination. Blood samples will be sent to Sion Hospital for more detailed analysis.
Since it is known that bees generally only attack when threatened or provoked, the reason for this attack will be investigated. A formal complaint has been filed at the Panvel Taluka police station for the investigation of the incident.
It is reported that every year in the United Kingdom, 2 to 9 people die due to bee or wasp stings. According to Allergy UK, a normal bee sting reaction - pain, swelling, redness, and itching - lasts for a few hours. However, a severe allergic reaction can affect the entire body and lead to symptoms such as sudden discomfort, dizziness, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.
