Juan Pedro Franco, known as the world's heaviest man, passed away at the age of 41. Franco, who once weighed 600 kilograms, died in a hospital in Mexico due to complications related to a kidney infection. He had also entered the record books as "the heaviest living person in the world."

Juan Pedro Franco, known as the world's most obese man, passed away at the age of 41. Once reaching 600 kilograms, Franco died in a hospital in Mexico due to complications related to kidney infection. His long years of extreme obesity and addiction significantly affected his life.

HE HAD BECOME BEDRIDDEN

In 2017, Franco was recorded by the Guinness World Records as the world's heaviest living person. At his peak, he reached a weight of 600 kilograms, was unable to move independently for years, and had largely become bedridden.

HE UNDERWENT GASTRIC SURGERY TWICE

According to a report by the Daily Mail, under medical supervision, Franco underwent a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits and vegetables and two bariatric surgeries (gastric reduction and gastric bypass). As a result of the treatment, his weight was nearly halved, and after being inactive for a long time, he managed to walk again.

HE SURVIVED COVID-19 BUT

Although doctors noted that weight loss reduced diabetes and cardiovascular risks, Franco's long-standing obesity still left him a high-risk patient. Despite surviving COVID-19 in 2020, his health rapidly deteriorated after a kidney infection.

Franco had said about his weight issues, "My body completely went its own way beyond my control. I tried diets for days, but nothing worked." After the surgery, he expressed, "Just being able to lift my arms every day, drink a glass of water, or go to the bathroom feels amazing. Being able to be more independent is a wonderful feeling."

SIMILAR CASES HAVE BEEN RECORDED

Franco's death reminded of other fatal cases related to extreme obesity. Among these cases are American Jon Brower Minnoch, recorded at an estimated weight of 635 kilograms, and Mexican Manuel Uribe at 544 kilograms. Minnoch died at the age of 41 from heart and respiratory failure, while Uribe passed away at 48 from liver failure.
