As negotiations for a collective labor agreement between the General Labor Union affiliated with DİSK and the Social Democratic Public Employers Union (SODEMSEN) representing the municipality at Buca could not reach an agreement, workers initiated a strike. On the second day of the strike, work came to a halt in almost all units of the municipality. Due to the workers being on strike, garbage was not collected throughout the district, leading to piles of trash accumulating around garbage containers and in the streets. THE BILL OF THE DISPUTE HAS FALLEN ON THE PUBLICHanife Ekim, a resident of Buca, stated that the bill of the dispute has fallen on İzmir, saying, "Both those who leave and those who come are the same. No one cares about İzmir. I don't know why they are sitting in that chair. Everywhere in the EVKA-1 neighborhood is filled with garbage," she said. "THE LOWEST OFFER OF 42 THOUSAND TL SALARY WAS REJECTED"Buca Mayor Görkem Duman stated in a post on his social media account yesterday, "During a period when the minimum wage is 17 thousand lira, our lowest salary offer of 42 thousand TL, which we made by pushing all the conditions of our municipality for my worker brothers to work under better conditions, has not been accepted by the DİSK General Labor Union Branch No. 5. If this offer had been accepted, salaries would have been 51 thousand lira in January 2025, along with the inflation difference. The conditions in which the country finds itself and the financial situation of our municipality only allow us to offer these figures. In an environment where we offered salaries more than double the minimum wage, the union is preventing us from serving my Büyük Buca family by not even accepting these salaries," he said.
