After the tragic death of 2-year-old Rana El Selci due to an attack by stray dogs in the Karatay district of Konya, the municipality announced that it was accelerating its efforts to collect the dogs in the area. However, despite the time that has passed, the presence of stray dogs still roaming the neighborhood has caused public outrage.
In the Başak neighborhood of the Karatay district in Konya, after the death of 2-year-old Syrian national Rana El Selci due to an attack by stray dogs on March 7, 2025, the area was revisited.
NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN THE DISTRICT
The Karatay Municipality had announced that nearly 2,500 dogs were collected after the incident and that the number of stray dogs had decreased. However, recent images from the area showed that stray dogs were still roaming in the neighborhood. Residents, concerned about the situation, are demanding that authorities take more effective measures.
MAYOR KILCA IS ACTIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Karatay Mayor Hasan Kılca, in his statement regarding the issue, said, "Our pain is great. In fact, we have been mobilizing for a long time to prevent the situation from reaching this point. Despite all kinds of obstruction attempts and attacks on our workers, we are collecting day and night without rest."
PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN SAID "THERE CAN BE NO EXPLANATION"
Regarding the issue, President Erdoğan also stated, "There can be no explanation for such a barbarity occurring in Turkey in 2025," and made the following statement: "I pray for God's mercy on our 2-year-old child Rana, who passed away due to an attack by stray dogs in Konya last night; I ask for patience from my Lord for her grieving family, especially her sorrowful mother and father. Despite all the obstructions from the opposition and some gang-like structures, we are taking determined steps to ensure the implementation of the law we enacted in August to solve the stray dog problem. However, unless precautions are taken, all local governments, regardless of opposition or government, need to work together to solve this growing problem. Unfortunately, there is still resistance to the law from the opposition side. Hopefully, we will overcome this as well, and we will ensure that everything necessary is done to prevent the slaughter of the beloved children that mothers cannot get enough of by stray dogs. Our chief prosecutor's office has initiated an investigation regarding the heartbreaking incident yesterday, and our inspectors have also been assigned. Once again, I pray for God's mercy on our child Rana and offer my condolences to her family."
