In the attack that took place at the National Congress building in the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, National Party deputy Gladis Aurora López was the target of a homemade explosive device.
HIT HER BACK
According to information reported by the Associated Press (AP), while preparations for gathering at the congress building were ongoing, the explosive hit López in the back area. It was reported that López fell to the ground, her jacket was torn, and she was taken to a medical facility after the first intervention at the scene. Authorities stated that the deputy's injuries were not life-threatening.
TARGETED THE GOVERNMENT SIDE
After the incident, Tomás Zambrano, the Chairman of the National Party Congress Group, claimed that the attack carried a political message, targeting the ruling LIBRE (Liberty and Refoundation Party) side. In a social media post, Zambrano described the attack as "an assault on the National Party."
POLITICAL TENSION IS RISING
The attack drew attention as it occurred in the shadow of rising political tension following the general elections held in November 2025. The AP report stated that the incident took place while the congress was discussing the LIBRE's request for a recount of the election results, and security cameras showed that the explosive was thrown from outside the building, from the street. It was noted that police teams had initiated efforts to capture the person who threw the explosive and another suspect accompanying them.
CLAIM OF "SEVERE BLEEDING"
Images related to the moment of the incident were also circulated on social media. Some foreign media outlets claimed that the explosive hit a region close to López's head and that there was severe bleeding at the scene, while official authorities announced that an investigation into the attack was ongoing.
