The South Azerbaijan Coordination Platform requested urgent diplomatic and political support from Turkey for the security of the Turkish population in South Azerbaijan in a letter sent to President Erdoğan. The letter stated, "Terrorist organizations are preparing to carry out genocide against Turks in the west of South Azerbaijan. Urmia and other Turkish cities are on the brink of occupation, and they plan to cleanse Turks from Turkey's eastern border. Yes, the main target is Turkey."
The South Azerbaijan Coordination Platform published a letter addressed to the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The platform stated that the Turkish population living in South Azerbaijan is under a security threat and requested diplomatic and political support from Turkey.
THERE IS A RISK OF OCCUPATION OF HISTORICAL LANDS
The letter expressed that the recent bombings and the security vacuum in the region have worsened the humanitarian situation. It was also claimed that some armed groups are trying to establish control over Turkish settlements in Urmia and its surroundings, which poses a risk of occupation of the historical lands of the South Azerbaijani Turks.
REMINDING OF THE EVENTS OF 1918
The platform emphasized that, recalling how Turkish soldiers saved the Turks from genocide in Urmia in 1918, there should be support for the safety of compatriots today with similar determination. The statement noted that Turkey's eastern border is a critical geopolitical belt in terms of national security, and developments that may occur in the region could directly affect Turkey as well.
CALL FOR "URGENT ACTIONS"
The South Azerbaijan Coordination Platform requested President Erdoğan to take urgent diplomatic and political steps to protect the Turks in South Azerbaijan and to prevent possible attempts of occupation.
