Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that there will be a significant increase in fines to enhance deterrence in traffic. According to the new regulation, drivers who weave in and out of traffic will face a fine of 90,000 TL, a 60-day license suspension, and vehicle impoundment. Those who fail to yield to ambulances will be fined 46,000 TL, while those participating in races will face a 2-year license revocation. Additionally, individuals who alter their license plates will be subject to a fine of 140,000 TL.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that penalties have been significantly increased to enhance deterrence and ensure safety in traffic. With the new regulation, heavy penalties are coming for drivers who speed, weave in and out of traffic, race, or fail to yield to ambulances.
Speaking on CNN Türk's live broadcast, Yerlikaya stated that body cameras to be used by the police and gendarmerie will be implemented in all units by the end of the year as part of the traffic safety reform. He emphasized that this system will record communication between security forces and citizens, as well as increase deterrence during inspections.
"CAMERAS HAVE REDUCED COMPLAINTS BY 90%"
Yerlikaya noted that citizen complaints have significantly decreased in areas where body cameras are used, stating, "When citizens see the camera, they pay more attention to their behavior. We will increase the deterrent effect."
NEW PENALTY SCHEDULE
Yerlikaya explained that inspections will be increased by 50% in 2024 and outlined the new penalty rates as follows:
- For drivers weaving in and out of traffic: 90,000 TL fine, 60 days license suspension and vehicle impoundment.
- For those exceeding speed limits: 30 to 90 days license revocation.
- For those failing to yield to ambulances and fire trucks: 46,000 TL fine, 30 days license cancellation.
- For those racing: 46,000 TL fine, 2 years license revocation.
- For those altering their license plates: 140,000 TL fine, 30 days traffic ban.
"NECESSARY ACTION TAKEN" APPLICATION COMING
Minister Yerlikaya also announced a new application called "Necessary Action Taken," which allows citizens to report traffic violations with video evidence. Citizens will be able to instantly report violations through images sent via e-Government; penal actions will be shared with the public.
TACHOGRAPH AND TAXIMETER OBLIGATION
With the new regulation, the use of tachographs and taximeters in freight and passenger transportation has become mandatory. Additionally, drivers causing accidents at red lights will have their documents confiscated for 60 days, and a psychotechnical evaluation will be required before the documents are returned.
